WHAT CAN A Green House LOOK LIKE?

The Green House approach transforms the outdated “institutional” model (based on hospitals) with real homes. We are replacing our Vernon Green Nursing Home with a Green House Community in partnership with the national organization The Green House Project. Elders who need 24-hour nursing supervision will enjoy quality-of-life and clinical benefits proven at similar communities across the country.

A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO SENIOR LIVING & CARE

  • Clinical systems such as nurse stations, call mechanisms and medical files will be concealed to maintain the home environment.

  • We see a Green House community that restores 24-hour nursing care to an interactive, relational home environment – one that eliminates the institutional model of care that’s been the norm for decades.

  • 60 elders will be served in individual neighborhood style homes, each with its own living and dining area, hearth, kitchen and private bedrooms and bathrooms.

  • A proven staffing approach will replace the conventional, hierarchical “chain of command” to give more power to the nursing assistants who have a direct relationship with the residents – ultimately empowering the elders.

  • Residents will direct their own daily schedules and preferences instead of having to fit into the institutional system.

GREEN HOUSE HOME VIEWS

Shown here are Green House exteriors and interiors from around the country and a typical floor plan. We envision similar design and styling that harmonizes with the Southern Vermont aesthetic.

WHY WE ARE BUILDING IT

Loneliness, helplessness and boredom are the realities of traditional nursing homes that we seek to replace. We are realizing a long-held vision centered on providing quality nursing care in a true home setting. The need and the demand among elders and their families is greater today than ever. Our mission of care will not only be sustained, but uplifted with this innovation for a new century at Vernon Homes.

This graph demonstrates our commitment to innovation and excellence during our 100 years of compassionate care.
